WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COACHING AND COUNSELING?

COACHING
We use a coaching approach if you are already fairly clear on what you want next in your leadership career, but are uncertain how to get there.

LEADERSHIP COACHING
  • Focuses you exclusively on the process of reaching your already-determined goal.
  • We'll reality-check your goal, assess it for specificity, and check how motivated you are to achieve it.
  • We'll work together to determine next steps.
  • You'll work those next steps on your own, returning at regular intervals to build momentum and check progress until your goal is achieved.
  • We have an agreed-upon number of meetings at the start.

COUNSELING
A counseling approach is used if you are unclear about what you want to do next--whether you're new in the workplace, or mid-career, or late career and looking to think about post-professional work.
CAREER COUNSELING
  • Focuses you on your dreams first, and then eventually moves you into the real world of work.
  • We'll talk a look at how well you know yourself:  your likes, dislikes, strengths, past work history, family work history, current financial situation and all the influences that go into a realistic career choice.
  • You'll be asked to do tailored work between meetings (which you will assign to yourself, in collaboration with me); this cuts down on your costs.
  • Meetings are held only when you are ready, and can be sporadic.
  • The goal is to help you identify a realistic career and work environment you'll enjoy and succeed in.
These two processes are not always  distinct, and your particular process may move back and forth between the two if needed.
